EDUARD EINSTEIN (28 JULY 1910-25 OCTOBER 1965) was born in Zurich, Switzerland. He is the second son of physicist Albert Einstein and his wife Mileva Maric. Einstein and his family moved to Berlin in 1914, but shortly thereafter Maric returned to Zurich, taking Eduard and his brother with her.
Eduard was a good student and had musical talent. He started to study medicine to become a psychiatrist , but by the age of twenty, he was afflicted with schizophrenia and two year later was institutionalised for the first of several times. Eduard belonged to the Serbian orthodox family who are well known for their perfectionism in everything comprising all the aspects and they have a cluster of rules and regulations to be followed setting up limitations.
The early sign symptoms were marked by the divorce between his parents . With Albert Einstien, leaving to US with the ascendance of Nazism in German, the absence of his father had a strong effect on him. He began suffering from frequent illness and early signs of emotional instability and had to be hospitalised many times.
Eduard’s psychological disorder developed through late adolescence and early adulthood. Later at the age of 20 , he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. As time went by Eduard become increasingly moody , withdrawn and suicidal.
Eduard was treated with various doctors including Sigmund Freud. Being treated for schizophrenia he was overdosed with drugs and harmed by the many cures that were used at that time. According to his brother Hans Albert Einstein, the thing that ruined him were the electric shock treatments.
His mother cared for him until she died in 1948. From then on Eduard lived most of the time at the psychiatrist clinic “Burgholzi” in “ Zurich”,where he died of a stroke at age 55. He is buried at Honggerberg-cemetery in zurich.
The legacy of Eduard’s illness was later used to create public awareness about schizophrenia.
